Jim is an intellectual property attorney with more than thirty years of experience in intellectual property law, including licensing intellectual property and various other aspects of patent law.

Prior to joining ecotechlaw®, Jim was employed as a patent attorney with The Dow Chemical Company from 1975 to 1980. From 1980 until his (temporary) retirement in 2006, Jim was employed as Senior Counsel with Chevron Corporation. He has also served as an expert witness on the licensing of technology in a lawsuit involving several hundred million dollars in licensing fees.

Patent Prosecution
While with The Dow Chemical Company, Jim drafted and prosecuted patents in the areas of pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, medical testing kits, drug testing equipment, reverse osmosis devices, and fermentation transformations. During his 26 years with Chevron Corporation, Jim drafted and prosecuted patents involving synthetic fuels, including oil shales, coal liquefaction, and the conversion of gas to liquids; refining processes; new catalysts; chemical processes; gas processing, including gas separation, gas liquefaction, and gas storage; and marine architecture.

Licensing
During his career, Jim has had extensive experience in negotiating, drafting, and reviewing highly complex licensing agreements covering the exchange of technology, both domestic and foreign. He has helped license both patents and know-how involving pharmaceuticals, refining technology, gas processing, nano-technology, and catalyst technology. In addition to the licensing of technology, most of these agreements also involved design, construction, and sales arrangements. Many of the projects he was responsible for during this time were worth in excess of a billion dollars. He also has extensive experience with negotiating and drafting research and licensing arrangements with universities.
